Pauline Mysticism

We invite your critical comments concerning the following thesis:

The claim of Pauline mysticism is groundless for to following reasons:

  1. There is no clear definition of the mysticism itself, so we do not know what we are looking for in the letters.

  2. The term “mysticism” does not occur in the corpus Paulinum, so there is no basis to talk about the mysticism in Paul.

  3. An attempt to find mysticism in Paul is the clearest example of eisegesis.

  4. Mysticism is a much more recent idea than the letters of Paul.

  5. In order to find mystical elements in Pauline writings, one has to presuppose the author to have been a mystic. There is, however, no evidence that Paul was a mystic.

Do you agree or disagree with any of these arguments? How do you support your position?

News from the SBL

Important changes concerning paper presentations at meetings

The SBL meeting in Atlanta recently approved a number of changes.
We would like to highlight in particular the following:

  1. There has also been considerable discussion about the criteria for the participation of students as paper presenters for the Annual Meeting. Council has also taken the following unanimous actions:

    1. All students without a doctoral degree are required to submit to the Program Unit Chair the full text of the paper they are proposing to read.

    1. The number of sessions a student without a doctoral degree can participate in will be limited to one.

The entire document can be found at: http://www.sbl-site.org/assets/pdfs/CouncilStatement_Nov2010.pdf

As the submission due date for the 2011 annual meeting is at the end of February 2011, this implies that those planning to submit proposals would best start as soon as possible to write their papers.

Unicode

The continual changes and developments in computer-related technology require that the bibilical scholar stay up to date in a number of areas related to contemporary scholarship. One of these areas in the font world. The new standard for fonts is what is known as Unicode. Please remember, that that the sooner you begin using Unicode, the less work it is and the more you can use its advantages!

  • Thanks to Gergely Juhasz we post here his very detailed presentation on Unicode in the biblical scholarhip, to be downloaded here.
